About the work

Daniel Balabán for 100pcs

Following his visit to Mount Vesuvius, to the summit of which the author carried a reproduction of a famous work by Manet, the subject becomes Breakfast in Lava. Instead of Manet’s picnic gathering, which was controversial for its time, in Balabán’s conception a group of tourists at the summit of the volcano, amidst pieces of lava and trash, gazes into their own uncertain future.

Lava is a symbol of rapid destruction, but also of the incredible possibilities for the renewal of life. We, the protagonists of today, are symbolically and literally treading on hot ground. At the same time, Balabán’s painting speaks not only of a possible apocalypse, but also of cycles, an awareness of infinite possibilities, and hope.
