About the work

Zdeněk Daněk for 100 pcs

"For 14 years, I went to paint in the Choltice Game Preserve. Between 2007 and 2021, the panoramic forest painting 'Great Panorama' was created. The painting is 13 meters long and consists of 11 panels. Due to the slow painting process, the images were created over different periods and years, forming a time-lapse. I turned the forest into my studio, named the individual trees, and imagined different parts of the forest as rooms. I painted the Great Panorama in the 'living room'.

The panorama is interesting for its compositional relationships; although each panel is composed independently, new relationships emerge when connected to the next. The painting 'The Thick One' (2019, 100 × 182 cm) is composed of two views from two different locations, so that the depicted trees are not obscured, and it best describes the situation where a centuries-old oak is surrounded by an ordinary young forest.

The main impetus for the 'Green Paintings' series was the announced revitalization of the Choltice Game Preserve. Currently, the municipality is trying to attract more people to the preserve, so in the present-day view, you would already see a motocross track, disc golf baskets, and, of course, trash in the background.

The only advantage is that the municipality lacks sufficient funds, so the logging is proceeding slowly, and it is still possible to find wild, primeval places with thousand-year-old oaks there."
