Matúš Maťátko (1984) is one of the most prominent Slovak illustrators and artists of the present. He graduated from the University of Fine Arts in Bratislava, where he studied free graphics and illustration under the leadership of prof. Dušan Kállay. His artistic expression was influenced by internships in Indonesia, Paris, Sofia and Antwerp. He lives and creates in Bratislava.

He devotes himself to illustration, sculpture and painting, and his work is often engaged and reflects social and historical events. In addition to free art, it focuses on a book illustration where it connects literary stories with rich symbolism and precise workmanship. Illustrated, for example, Orwell's animal farm (2023), Prešporské legends (2022) or spring Kriples (2011). His works have been awarded many times and nominated for Najkrajsius the book of Slovakia.

In the public space he realized monumental mtsals such as Anjeli (2015) on Mariánská Street and Marted (2018) on Jakubovo Square in Bratislava, the animals of Európske's importance (2023) in Dúbravice or the hand of Mier (2024, Spolutor F. Sabol) in Jerusalem. His important exhibition projects include, for example, Biela-Modrá-red Epic (2020–2021, Gallery P. M. Matúš Maťátko for 100pcs

The picture of the brother, these are not drummers originated on the occasion of the Bílá-blue-blue exhibition in the Lipt Gallery and, like the whole exhibition, responds to turning points in the history of Czechoslovakia. One of them is 1968 and the occupation of the Warsaw Pact troops. This motif is based on the then graffiti and drawings that appeared in the streets as a symbol of resistance. This symbol impressed me so much that I interpreted it with my own graphic language and transferred to a colored relief. They are tanks, 'drums' who roll through the landscape - and the reference to Karel Kryl is clear in the name.

This topic is again up again today. My work is engaged, follows the events around us and puts it in a historical context. Looking at the current situation - the conflict in Ukraine, the attitudes of some politicians, a social mood that sometimes turns dangerously to the Russian side - it is important to remember where such roads are going. Brother, these are not drums is a memento, warning that we have to learn from history.
